180 pixels, Apple touch
A browser tab uses 16 pixels. iPhone home screens want 180. Android wants 192 and 512. The .ico file carries 16, 32, 48, and 256 for software that still asks for favicon.ico.
How to convert a JPG to ICO
- Drop a JPG on the felt, or choose a file. PNG and SVG work too. Paste from the clipboard works.
- Choose a square, round, or squircle badge, and set the padding. Leave the backing color off to keep transparent pixels.
- Download favicon.ico. It holds images at 16, 32, 48, and 256 pixels.
The browser builds the ICO on this computer. The JPG is not uploaded.
